This seminar considers a variety of legal issues facing mass media. The topics covered in any given semester will be chosen from the following list of representative topics: advance issues in defamation and privacy laws and their application to print, broadcast and social media; legal responses to fake news; legal control of broadcasting, political equal time, and news distortion rules; reporter's privilege and legal issues related to the gathering of news; regulation of obscenity, indecency, and violence in the media; media election projections; issues addressing the public financing and control of public broadcasting; media access to courts and public records; media tort liability; access to social media (e.g., Twitter); media and national security; and media obligation to children. Students may elect to utilize the seminar paper to satisfy the writing requirement.
