Description
The instructors have developed and maintained a partnership with the Ecole Superieure de Droit de Jeremie (ESCDROJ). Since approximately 1999, as a result of this long-standing relationship, law students and faculty from Hastings have traveled to Haiti every academic year during Spring break, except for those years in which political upheaval in Haiti made travel inadvisable. Due to political upheaval in Haiti in March 2020, students instead traveled to Tapachula, Mexico, to conduct a fact-finding investigation with Haitian refugee women. In 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel to Haiti was again suspended and students instead engaged in substantive legal exchanges with ESCDROJ students in Haiti via Zoom and conducted interviews with Haitians deported from the United States over the phone to document the impact of U.S. immigration policy. This coming year, we hope to resume Spring break travel to Haiti. Should that not be possible, we will conduct a remote exchange with ESCDROJ and design a human rights intervention in collaboration with partner organizations.
