Description

In this advanced follow-up course to the basic 3- and 4-unit Criminal Procedure course we cover the criminal adjudication process "from bail to jail." Topics covered include: bail, prosecutorial decisionmaking, preliminary hearings, grand jury proceedings, plea bargaining and guilty pleas, pretrial motions, change of venue, the right to a speedy trial, joinder and severance, jury selection and composition, jury deliberations, jury instructions and verdicts, defendant's right to testify, right to effective assistance of counsel, self-representation, sentencing, double jeopardy, immigration consequences of criminal convictions, and post-conviction challenges (appeals, habeas corpus, and relief for exonerees).
